This past Veterans Day Lauren Hall, the new assistant director of shared interest groups for Tufts Alumni, and Tufts ROTC students made the trek up the Memorial Steps to Ballou Hall with two special guests at their side. The group was helping the sister and brother-in-law of Captain Edmund E. Johnson Jr., A51, AG55, climb the Hill. Captain Johnson was specially recognized at the ceremony for his military service.
“They arrived a bit late,” says Hall, “and due to some mobility issues it was a very long journey up Memorial Steps, but they were so proud to be there.”
The annual Veterans Day event honors members of the Tufts community who are military veterans, as well as current students who are in the ROTC. The day began with a traditional flag passing ceremony with remarks from President Monaco, Dean Glaser, and keynote speaker Elliot Ackerman, A03, F03, and ended with a light lunch reception in the Coolidge room.
Hall was impressed by the turnout, but, she says, it was the intense amount of Jumbo pride shown by everyone in attendance that blew her away.
“The Veterans Day Ceremony was a wonderful introduction to the many ways that the Jumbo spirit comes across. It’s not just about cheering on the sports teams or coming back to campus for reunions, but also about connecting through events like this. It was incredibly clear that everyone there was very proud of their Tufts affiliation, and their support of the ROTC and all veterans,” she remarked.
“Before working here, I was told what a wonderful community it is, and I can honestly say that’s true.” And the biggest perk of all? “It’s a beautiful campus!”
