On November 29, more than 70 alumni gathered at the Charing Cross Hotel in London to reconnect, and most importantly, to welcome President Monaco to the Jumbo fold.
Tufts Alumni London steering committee member, Flora Mutuku, F04, says that as a former international student and recipient of a generous scholarship to Tufts, she was pleased to hear the president speak on enhancing diversity and financial aid.
And as to the global citizenship of the university, she adds, “It is reassuring that the president can relate to the joys and frustrations of expatriate life and understands the issues and politics facing global regions where alumni live and work.”

Sharing a reminder of those joys, Tufts Alumni London gave President Monaco a small replica of an elephant that was part of last spring’s Elephant Parade, an outdoor art exhibition of decorated elephant statues that raised awareness and support for Asian elephant conservation. While Jumbo hails from Africa, the pachyderm connection was not lost—especially since this elephant sported a proud Union Jack, pairing President Monaco’s Oxford past with his Tufts future.
As to the old friends Mutuku caught up with at the Together, We Begin event, she says, “we’ve promised not to wait for the next Tufts event to meet up” with more than a few long-overdue cups of tea.
