On Sunday, December 3, 150 foster children and families came from as near as Medford and as far as Framingham, Mass. to enjoy the 24th Annual Foster Children’s Holiday party in Alumnae Lounge. A favorite tradition for the Active Citizens of Tufts Boston, the party provides free presents, activities, and food for foster kids in Massachusetts.
The festivities got under way the previous Wednesday, at a traditional event for the Tufts Men’s Baseball Team—the annual Wrap Night. About 50 staff, alumni, and student athletes gathered to decorate Alumnae Lounge and to wrap books and presents to be packed up for the children.
President of Scholastic, Inc. Hugh Roome, F77, AG77, FG80, A11P, donated 220 books from the publishing house. The donation provided such a wealth of books that a Book Nook was created for the party, where any books not wrapped as presents were presented in a cozy reading corner and could be taken home.
On the day, the children were treated to an array of games and activities—and the alumni volunteers manned at their craft stations were excited to share in the joy. From decorating sugar cookies to making snowflake ornaments, kids whizzed about, pizza (donated from Eat at Jumbos) and ice cream (donated by J.P. Licks) in hand.

Many stopped to admire Pete Shungu, A03, AG10, who entertained by playing carols on his trumpet. And everyone stopped for Jumbo, who happily posed for photos which were then printed on site as souvenirs for the families.
Santa’s arrival at the end of the afternoon was the icing on the cake. With a sack full of toys wrapped just a few days before by enthusiastic volunteers, he was immediately surrounded by children who were guaranteed more than a few presents this Christmas.
