A delicious gathering for local Latino alumni
July 05, 2012
Family, community, cuisine.
All three were prominent at the Latino Alumni Association BBQ Potluck on June 16, hosted by Valerie Avila, E99, at her home in Medford. Local Latino Jumbos feasted on a menu of Redbones BBQ—a Davis Square staple and Tufts favorite—and homemade side dishes provided by attendees as they discussed the wants and needs of the Latino alumni community.
For Avila, volunteering to bring alumni together is all about giving back. “I think it’s important to give back to our community,” she says. “I would not be where I am today if it was not for Tufts.”
In addition to the family-friendly vibe, the event had a distinctly culinary flavor as attendees exchanged recipes for their best dishes. The overwhelming favorite? Cachapas, savory corn cakes made with authentic corn flour from Venezuela.
Says Avila, “Part of the Latino culture is centered on food. It is a reason to come together and talk openly.”
Miss talking openly with your fellow alumni? Come to a future alumni event in your area!
