New Jersey Tufts Alumni band together to help fight hunger
December 04, 2009
On Saturday, November 14th, Tufts Alumni of New Jersey conducted their annual citizenship event, serving as volunteers at the Community FoodBank of New Jersey (CFBNJ). Thirty alumni and friends participated by preparing several thousand newsletters for mailing. The group also donated many bags of non-perishable groceries for distribution to those in need.
Before the volunteer shift began, members of the CFBNJ staff presented an overview of the need for food assistance in New Jersey. In the last year, the number of people seeking assistance increased by an alarming thirty percent. Further, more than forty percent of households that are helped by CFBNJ choose between purchasing food and paying rent. The knowledge that their efforts would address this serious problem made it a very satisfying day for all that were involved. The day ended with Tufts volunteers discussing how best to continue helping the Community FoodBank of New Jersey with its effort to alleviate food insecurity and address the basic needs of those struggling to survive difficult circumstances in our state.
Tufts Alumni of New Jersey also used the occasion to give the Tufts New Jersey Citizenship Award to Susan (Britman) Present, J87, for her dedicated and inspiring work in the community. Susan is active with one group that provides educational opportunities to students of modest means and another that addresses youth development. She is a docent at a local art center and a member of TAAP. She has also been active in supporting local public education and in temple projects. Congratulations Susan!
