Alumni Weekend 2004: A great success!

May 28, 2004

More than 3,000 alumni returned to Tufts last week to celebrate reunions and make another terrific Alumni Weekend.

The festivities, running from May 20 to May 23, drew graduates of all generations from several countries and 35 states including England, Alaska, and Hawaii.

"We're thrilled by the enthusiasm and interest that alumni express when they come back to Tufts," said Tom Williams, A92, assistant director of constituent relations. "We try to provide something for everyone so that over the course of several days they reconnect with Tufts and friends."

As always, there was a big turnout for the oldest Brown and Blue tradition, Tufts Night at Pops. More than 1,500 alumni, students, parents and friends packed Symphony Hall to hear the world-acclaimed Boston Pops perform a spectacular repertoire of American music. The Super Seminars on Friday drew crowds for timely presentations on topics ranging from the college application process and nutrition for life to the first Jumbo Career Networking event.

The festivities continued into the afternoon with the 55 and Over Reunion Celebration. Alumni from the classes of 1925 to 1948 welcomed the class of 1949 into this great society.

The day's celebrations culminated at the Big Gig, where more than 400 alumni enjoyed dinner, dancing and music at the Gantcher Family Sports and Convocation Center. Just prior to the party, class gifts were recognized by President Lawrence S. Bacow and Alan MacDougall, A65, president of the Tufts University Alumni Association. A special round of applause thanked the Class of 1954 who shattered the university giving rate by more than 15%--they succeeded with 82.5% participation!

On Saturday, the Cavalcade of Classes paraded into the Alumni Family Picnic on Carmichael Quad, where more than 550 alumni and families gathered in the Jumbo Tent for a scrumptious buffet, complete with music, children's entertainment and "Kids' Corner."

The evening unfolded with individual class reunions held on and around campus. Congratulations to all the classes for bringing so many alumni back to the Hill.

The weekend continued into the evening with the Candlelight Procession and the Top O' the Hill Tribute, where the class of 2004 was welcomed into the ranks of alumni. Thanks to all who made this Alumni Weekend one of the most successful ever!
