Description

Join us for a fascinating presentation and interactive discussion on art, social justice, and imagination.

The role of contemporary artists in our society is expanding, with a significant number of visual artists choosing to focus their art on a wide range of social issues. This interactive presentation will show you images by artists- painters, photographers, sculptors, installation artists- whose work has served to create change and inspire viewers to become engaged and inspired.

This event helps participants engage in the artwork, and they will be able to compare the ways different artists have addressed issues such as homelessness, immigration, climate change, racism, war and political conflict. A special emphasis will be on Bay Area artists, and will include work created by Tufts and SMFA students. No art experience is necessary to attend, just an interest in seeing the ways in which art can serve as a force for civic engagement and active citizenship. You will see and talk about artists making waves and leave with a list of resources and ways you can become involved locally, nationally, and globally.

Mindy Nierenberg is a mixed media visual artist and art educator. The course she teaches, called “Art, Activism, and Community: Visual Art for Social Change”, has inspired both Tufts and School of the Museum of Fine Arts students to see art differently and understand the increasing role of artists as active citizens. She is also the Senior Program Manager of the Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service at Tufts, and provides students with opportunities to create social change while increasing their academic learning and exploring their individual passions. Prior to her work at Tufts, Mindy served as an associate dean at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, where she founded the Office for Community Service Learning. She has served as a consultant for art schools and visual art departments of universities, and given workshops and talks on visual art, community, and social change across the country and internationally.
